Third grade is a very important year for your child! The reading focus changes from decoding (sounding out) words to learning the basic mechanics of reading. The children begin to read for meaning, not simply sounding out sentences. Comprehension comes to the forefront as an important focus. In second grade, students will be given many chances to read aloud with a partner, silently on their own, and aloud in groups. They will also listen to books being read aloud by the teacher, other adults, and other students.
