The ABC’s of Third Grade I would like to welcome everyone to Third Grade! We have numerous fresh and innovative ideas to incorporate into the classroom. We will be doing many fun and exciting activities this school year. I hope that third grade will be full of new and meaningful experiences that will help your child grow both academically and socially!
A Attendance Learning and fun take place everyday! Please make sure your child comes to school everyday on time, except in cases of illness or emergency. Agenda – Your child’s agenda is an important link between school and home. Please check for notes and sign it every night!
B Birthdays
C Communication Communication between home and school is very important for your third grader. Feel free to contact the school or send a note in your child’s agenda as we check them everyday.
D Daycare and Buses If your child is going somewhere different at the end of the day than where he/she normally would go please make sure you send a note telling where they will be going. If there isn’t a note, we are required to send them to the place where they would normally would go. This is for your child’s safety and is a rule at our school!
E Emergencies The school may need to contact you in case of an emergency. If your phone number or address changes, please notify the school. This is very important.
F Field Trips Third grade is planning on taking approximately two field trips this year. More information will follow.
G Grading Procedures Please look at your child’s take-home folder nightly. If there are several errors on a paper, we will ask your child to correct and return it the next day. The grading scale for second grade report cards are as follows: 3: Meeting Grade Level Expectations 2: Developing Grade Level Expectations 1: Not Meeting Grade Level Expectations
H Homework Your child will have reading homework Monday through Thursday. * Homework is reinforcement of skills learned in class. Please check your child’s homework and help only if they ask for it. As a part of their homework, your child should be reading at least 20 minutes every night to you. Please have your child fill out his/her own reading log independently.
I Individual Folder Each student will have a take-home folder. Inside this folder there will be two pockets. One side will say: return to school. The other: keep at home. These folders are purchased at the beginning of the year and ordered by the teacher.
J Jolly We hope that all of us can have a fun and “jolly” year.
K Kindness We have a “0 Tolerance” rule for unkind behavior. This includes actions and words. Kindness is expected out of everyone.
L Learning Learning is the key to success.
M Money When sending in money with your child (i.e. lunch, field trip, book order, etc.), please be sure to place it in an envelope marked with your child’s name, my name, and what the money is for. I collect all notes from home in the morning.
N Newsletters Each teacher will send home a Classroom Newsletter each week or monthly. In this newsletter, they will be helpful information on what is happening in each classroom. (The newsletter will be sent home via email.)
O Organization Good organizational habits begin to form in second grade. Please make sure your child brings his/her take-home folder to school everyday along with their agenda book!
P Practice Just like any other thing you expect to be good at, the skills learned in school need to be practiced. Please provide time at home after school for your child to practice their math facts and reading.
Q Questions or Concerns Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or concerns. The best way to contact me is via email.
R Reading We will be doing lots of reading in 3rd grade. Please allow time for your child to read to you. Read books to them that are more advanced than their reading level. Share with them your love for reading!
S Scholastic Book Clubs Your child will be bringing home book order forms frequently this year. This is a great way to purchase books inexpensively, while helping our class earn points towards other items!
T Talking Talking to friends about feelings and ideas is an important part of learning. There are, however, appropriate and inappropriate times to talk. We understand that breaking rules about talking may seem less important than others, but we encourage you to support me in the enforcement of this rule, because it does affect your child's learning as well as other children.
U Unique We believe that each child has unique learning differences; therefore we will be providing instruction to your child that may be different than his or her peers.
V Volunteers If you would like to volunteer in the school please fill out the form that your child brings home. If you would like to chaperone a field trip please contact us and we will provide you with the necessary forms and requirements.
W Writing Reading and writing are closely linked. This year your child will be writing both expository essays and narrative stories. We will be trying hard to learn about the correct uses of punctuation and grammar as well. Students will also learn how to RAP their responses appropriately by restating the question, answering it, and proving it in the text.
X Y Z We are eXcited to work with You and Your child this year! Make sure he/she gets plenty of Zzzzz’s each night as we have eXciting days planned for this year.
